Case-Studies

Towards the end of the course, you will work on a live project where you will be implementing testing concepts, VBS, BVA and ECP to work on Quality Assurance
Following are some of the industry-specific Quality Assurance case studies included in our Quality Assurance Training Program

CASE STUDY #1 – Arena Application

Industry: Multimedia (Animation and VFX)
Data: This Arena application can be used to find a course on interest in animation. The screen below will help the user to find a Course by entering details like Name, Gender, Date of birth, email-Id, Phone, City, Pin code, Interested in and Comments

a. Name: Text Box – This field can accept only Alphabetic values of Maximum 30 Characters in length. It is a Mandatory Field
b. Gender: Radio Button – The current values available in a database are Male or Female. It is a Mandatory Field
c. Date of Birth: List Box – The user can select the date of birth from the list box in DD-Month-Year format. It is a Mandatory Field
d. Email: Textbox – This field can accept Mix of Alphanumeric and special characters in a valid Email Format.
e. Phone: Textbox – This field can accept only numeric values of Valid STD Code with Landline Number. It is a Mandatory Field
f. City: Textbox – This field can accept Alphabetic values of maximum 30 Characters
g. Pincode: Textbox – This field can accept only numeric values of 6 digits
h. Interested in: List Box – The current values available in the database are Animation career course (31 Months), Multimedia Career course (32 Months), Web Designing Career Course (12 Months)
i. Comments: Text box – This field can accept alphanumeric values of Maximum 500 Charac
j. SUBMIT: Button – The user after entering the necessary details, clicks the “SUBMIT” button
The System validates the data
1. If valid, displays the message, “Successfully Submitted” in the next page
2. Error Message will be displayed in the Error Page if the data is invalid
k. Cancel: Button – All the data will be erased on the current page if the user clicks on the button after filling the details
Problem Statement: Analyze the data in the Application Screenshot to:
1. Identify all the test scenarios for the mentioned requirement
2. Write all the test cases using the appropriate testing techniques wherever applicable for the below requirement.
3. Log the defects mentioned above effectively with all the details, relating the requirement mentioned such that the developers would understand
4. Write Defect Description for the below caset
On clicking the “Submit” button without entering any value in the “Phone” field, no error message got displayed
User clicks on “Interested in” list box and it is blank without any value
The User fills in all the details and clicks on “Cancel” button. The system does not erase the filled form /data
CASE STUDY #2 – State Transition Testing
Data: When a door lock is controlled by swiping a magnetised card through a slot in the lock. When the door is unlocked, it can be opened. Here are some of the trials for your information:
Swiping a valid card once through the lock causes an indicator light to flash green for two seconds but the door remains unlocked
Swiping a valid card through the lock for the second time while the indicator light is flashing green causes the indicator light to flash alternatively red and green for two seconds, and then the door is locked. The door can be unlocked by repeating this process (i.e. swiping a valid card twice within two seconds)
Swiping an invalid card when the indicator light is OFF causes the indicator light to flash red for two seconds.
Swiping an invalid card when the indicator light is flashing causes no effect
Problem Statement:
1. Draw the state transition graph for the door lock described above. There are 3 unique events and 8 unique states.
2. Number each of the transitions in your state transition graph and using these numbers list all of the transition pairs that would need to be covered to achieve 100% Chow’s 1-switch coverage
3. Design a set of test cases that achieve 100% Chow’s 1-switch coverage
4. Complete the following state table

CASE STUDY #3 – Decision Tables

Scenario 1
Data: – A hotel chain runs a loyalty card scheme that gives the scheme members special privileges. Scheme members will receive points and a free newspaper for each night they stay. They also receive a free upgrade to a superior room if they have not already booked a superior room
Problem Statement:
1. Draw a decision table for the scenario above

Scenario 2
Data: – Another hotel chain’s loyalty card scheme comprises three tiers gold, silver and basic. Some guests are not members of the scheme and so do not hold a card
Basic card holders receive basic points per night’s stay. They also receive a free newspaper if they have booked a superior room
Silver card holders receive 1.5 times the basic points per night’s stay. They receive a free newspaper regardless of the type of room they have booked
Gold card holders receive 2 times the basic points per night’s stay. They also receive a free newspaper regardless of the type of room they have booked. Gold card holders are also given a free upgrade to a superior room if they have not booked a superior room
Non-card holders do not receive any points and qualify for neither a free newspaper nor a free upgrade
Problem Statement:
1. Draw a new decision table for scenario 2 and consider if it is appropriate to rationalise the table, that is, combine two or more combinations into one
